Welcome to Tyler First Church of the Nazarene
Early History of First Church
Some have always maintained that the Nazarene Church was born in the fire of revival; it was certainly true of Tyler First Church. A series of revival services held in the spring and summer of 1925 resulted in people being saved and a small group organizing a new church. The first building that this group used was a store building located on South Fannin that had been used to sell poultry. The rent on the building was $3 per month. It is reported that the first service had 14 people present: Sam Towns, his wife and six children; a Mr. &Mrs. Simmons and the two children; and John Holder and his daughter Pauline.
The rented building was used until spring when a tent was erected on North Broadway. That fall property was purchased at 723 Bow Street and a tent erected on the back of the property to be used until the church called its first pastor, J.E Williamson. God blessed the church with donated supplies as well as leading Sam Towns to a quantity of lumber that the church was able to purchase reasonably. One of the members, John Holder, was a contract carpenter and contributed greatly to the construction.
Though the church was not completely finished, the people were anxious to get into the new building but two indispensable pieces of furniture were still missing- an alter and a pulpit. A board that had been discarded as too thick for any practical purpose was used to make an alter. Brother Sam Towns used spare leaves from their dining room table to make a pulpit. (It is still kept in the church today)
The Church was built just before the great depression and the congregation still had indebtedness on the building when money really became scarce. At one time the church was six months behind on its note and the lender was about to foreclose. A terrible hail storm came and the money from the insurance was enough for the people to put on a new roof and catch the building payment up. God does work in mysterious ways.
Following World War II, the church really began to grow and had its most prosperous years. In 1948, under the ministry of Fred Fike the church took in 36 new members by profession of faith, the largest number ever received by the church in one year. It was at this time that the church decided that they needed a new sanctuary so the original wooden sanctuary was replaced in 1949 by one built of brick.
The church continued to meet at the location on Bow Street until 1970 when land was purchased oat the present location, 3700 Old Bullard Road. A new building was erected and was dedicated on August 23, 1970.
The Early History of First Church was written in 2000 to represent the churches 75th anniversary. The church continues to grow and prosper and we expect to look at today as a milestone in the history of Tyler First Church of the Nazarene.

We believe:
- In one God-the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
- That the Old and New Testament Scriptures, given by plenary inspiration, contain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living.
- That man is born with a fallen nature, and is, therefore, inclined to evil, and that continually.
- That the finally impenitent are hopelessly and eternally lost.
- That the atonement through Jesus Christ is for the whole human race; and that whosoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is justified and regenerated and saved from the dominion of sin.
- That the Holy Spirit bears witness to the new birth, and also to the entire sanctification of believers.
- That our Lord will return, the dead will be raised, and the final judgment will take place.
Our Purpose Statement:
Tyler First Church of the Nazarene exists to magnify God by leading people to membership in Christs body, maturity in Christ, ministry in the church and mission in the world.
Our Core Values Statement:
A core value is a constant, passionate, Biblical belief.
- We value people - We believe that every person was created by God, is loved by God and is therefore a person of value (Genesis 1:26, 27; John 3:16).
- We value guests - We believe that every guest to a service or event of this local church should be received as a gift from God and should be treated accordingly (1 Corinthians 4:2; James 5:17).
- We value obedience to the Great Commission. We believe this church exists to reach and teach (Matthew 28:19, 20).
- We value Bible-centered preaching and teaching. We believe only the Word of God has power to transform us from individuals separated from God by sin to Christlike persons (Matthew 28:19, 20; 1 Corinthians 1:17, 18; 2 Timothy 3:15-17).
- We value Godly servant leaders - We believe that those who lead in the church should have the mind of Christ who came not to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45).
- We value Empowering Leadership - We believe our leaders should focus on equipping other Christians to serve (Ephesians 4:12).
- We value Church Growth - We believe this church should make more and better disciples (Matthew 28:19, 20).
- We value Gift-Oriented Mobilization - We believe that every member of this Church should be mobilized for ministry in the church and mission in the world on the basis of their spiritual gifts (Ephesians 4:7-16).
- We value Efficiency and Effectiveness - We believe that every board, team, task-force, ministry and program of this church should be regularly evaluated to determine if we are doing the right thing the best way (Mark 2:27).
